My dog wont stop going to the bathroom indoors

Question
QUESTION: My dog is home alone for about 10 hours a day.  I have a dog walker that takes him out for 20mins in the afternoon.  However, I am still getting pooping and peeing in the house.  He was in daycare from 2 - 6 months old and he is now 10 months old and has been out of daycare for almost 4 months.  What can I do to stop the bathroom indoors?

ANSWER: As long as he is getting a mid day break, you could crate him.  Start out putting his toys in the crate.  Feed him in the crate.  Just leave him short periods at first.  Leave him sturdy, safe toys, but no food or water.  The craate restricts activity allowing him to go longer without food or water or relievving him self.

QUESTION: Ok, great, thanks.  I will start trying that.  I've tried the crating before but he barks, loud, and for hours and hours non-stop.  I live in a loft and my neighbors are extremely upset with the barking.  He doesn't bark anymore because I don't crate him.  I guess I just need to slowly get him used to it like you said using food and the toys...would you agree?

Answer
You hadn't mentioned the barking.  With some dogs it is a big problem.  There are some other things that may or may not help.  Neuter him if not already.  It is no cure all, but often helps with many behavior problems.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

In the end, the only solution may be back to day care.
