Stomach Noise

Question
I have read your replies to a few questions like mine, but I'm not sure they totally apply due to her age/breed.
I have a 11 year old pit/rot mix. Recently has had Very loud stomach gurgles.Increased gas and belching. Stool is normal. Still eating normal. She also does appear to have some weight loss as well.
Any chance it's worms or maybe even GDV?
Thinking it maybe more than a diet issue.
Do you feel I should seek a vet for bloodwork and x-rays, or try a diet change?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Sarah,

I can't diagnose your dog.  Because your dog has had some weight loss, the sounds might not be the normal grunts and grumbles of her stomach in the digestive process.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome (GDV) also known as "bloat", occurs in dogs when the stomach dilates and twists into an abnormal position, causing nonproductive retching, a bloated abdomen, the dog would act depressed, salivate excessively, and seem restless. GDV is a serious, life-threatening condition that requires emergency treatment. Without prompt medical attention, dogs with bloat can die very quickly. Your dog's symptoms don't sound like bloat, but if you ever think your dog has bloat, you shouldn't wait for a response from an Internet help-line.

With an older dog,  it's always good to make sure there are no underlying problems when there is unexplained weight loss. If you're concerned, you should have your dog examined by your veterinarian. The fee for the office visit is the cost of your peace of mind!

Best of luck,

Patti
