Question
I wanted to get my yorkie neutered because everyone told me it would be better. he was completely potty trained and lately he has not been making it at all. so we decided to get him neutered but people are telling me he is to young and will die during it and then people are telling me to do it and it will be the best thing for him. his was born aug 3, 2006 and he has an appointment on friday and i don't know what to do. please tell me what you think I should do for him. I just want the best for him.
Thanks,
April

Answer
Hello, Do not worry as long as you have faith in your vet all with be fine. It is reccomended to spay/neuter pet/companion dogs at 5-6 months of age so hes just on time...not too young. I got my boston terrier 12 pound female spayed in the first week of december she was 7 1/2 months...I didnt wait because of her age but because spaying a female here is fairly expensive here, it is considered high risk to put flat or pushed face breeds under for surgery but she did fine and came home the same day as did my other dogs. Also when I was picking her up that evening there was a lady picking up a tiny(3/4 pound) female chihauhua from a spay I watched her carry her out so its very safe for small dogs to be altered just the same as larger or older dogs. Also what i can say is a neutered dog heals faster and is back to normal faster then a spayed dog...my jack russell terrier walked like a cowboy' for the first two/three days and then was back to normal...he was slow jumping up on chairs/couches and my bed for the first 4/5 days then was back to nomrla. Also the vet will say the dog wont want to eat right away after the surgery...it was only true with my boston terrier she onyl ate later that evening thou the vets say the dog will only eat the next day...offer food and water anyway, make sure he stays warm after the surgery as the dog cant termoregulate properly for the first few days...if he is licking alot get him a cone.
