Eating Found Foreign Objects

Question
Hello & thank you for taking the time to hear about my trouble with my puppy.

A stray puppy mutt (I think she is part redbone coonhound/rodesian ridgeback/dachsund?) 25 lbs, when found, now 35lbs, is very smart & attentive. She goes every where with me; work, walks all the time, stores, she picks up commands very quickly, could sit & stay right away & comes (most the time). The one bad habit of hers that I'm trying to break her of is finding food/debris/cat poop/what have you, and eating it. I have caught her in the act & scolded her & she seems to understand she's doing wrong. She has listened on a few occations & stopped eating & came to me. Other times, she will continue to eat & give me this look of shame while she's acting bad.
Any suggestions as to how I can break her of this habit would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks again,
divinity.

Answer
Hello Divinity,  I wish I could give you an instant cure for this, however there may not be one.  I have a bassett hound customer who does exactly the same thing, even adding rocks to the list.  Nothing seems to work except a muzzle when he is out of doors.  Your dog does seem very smart, so continue the positvie reinforcement of correcting when she does grab something and other than working with her continuously, over and over again until she understands, you might have to muzzel her just so she does not harm herself and pick up something that could endanger her health. Good Luck, Cindy lou :)
