Dog & Cats

Question
Tina K-9,
Please, I need advice from someone who knows a good number of various breeds of dogs. I have two cats who up until 3 months ago had a very good companionship with our dog, which unfortunatly got killed in a road accident. Since then the cats have had the run of the front & back gardens. We live in a suburbian area which has mainly free standing homes,& no heavy traffic. We require a Guard type of dog, which must not have a killing instinct for small animals (cats), which can be trained to protect both owners & property.
A tall order? Maybe thats how come I am having problems finding someone with the knowledge of Dogs which breeds, charcter & personality fits my needs. Most people suggest that I stay away from the Husky, Terriers and Larger dogs, even the Chows. Are they correct? What Breed & types are your suggestions?
Thanks, I'm looking forward to your swift reply.

Answer
Hello Lin,
Most dogs when they are raised as a puppy with other animals will learn that the cats are a member of your pack and they will not hurt them.  The dog would be obedience trained of course.  The German Shepherd is an excellent breed and we have many German Shepherds that live with cats. This would be the breed that I recommend that most, of course I am very fond of this breed.  This breed is used for so many different types of work including Service Dogs. You can go to our website, http://www.germanshepherd-k9-imports.com
I would stay away from the Doberman and large terriers.
The Rottweiler can be good with other animals but it is harder to find a good one.  but as I said, alot of breeds will be just fine with the cats if they are trained properly from the beginning.  Best regards,  Dawn Hoppe & Tina K-9
