Hi Kristin,
I have a 15 mo. old male Chihuahua. He was neutered at 6 mos. He was difficult to potty train from the start but got fairly consistent by 12 mos. He has a doggie door to my deck where he goes on a potty patch. He consistently goes there every am after sleeping all night. If it is cold, rainy or dark however, I notice he does not want to go out there at all and sneaks to go on rugs or carpet. We live in San Diego. It doesn't get much better than that weatherwise! I keep the bedroom and bathroom doors closed and I am here most of the time but I can't see him at all times. He just seems lazy and a bit stubborn. He doesn't appear to be marking - just relieving for pee and poop.He is rewarded and disciplined accordingly. If he gets away with it, he seems to be on a roll and dedicated to messing in the house more frequently. I take him out for walks almost every day. He goes then if he needs to. I clean his mistakes asap with Nature's Miracle and use 'Behave' deterrent on his favorite spots. Also, we are at my daughters house quite often. She has a yard but he never gives and indication of when he needs to go - like whining at the door. I use the same command all the time - 'Go pee pee!".
He rarely goes 'on command'. I try to anticipate when he might need to go after play and eating but we are still having to many problems. I would be grateful for any suggestions. I love my dog but I need a clean, fresh smelling house. Thank you

The best way to fix this is to buy him a crate(if you haven't done so yet)and put him in there at all times,except for feeding,playtime,going outside walks ect for about 3 weeks. Dogs like to keep crates clean as they have to sleep in them. And then after three weeks slowly let him be out more,if the accidents return,back in the crate he goes full time for another 10 days. This is the fastest way of teaching him to hold it in-let him outside about every 2 or 3 hours if you can during the day
