looking for small dog

Question
QUESTION: Our family just purchased our first house.  We have 2 boys (ages 6 & 8)  They want a dog so bad.  I am expecting our 3rd child in early Dec.  I would like to find a small dog for my boys to give them at Christmas.  We will need something small with an even temper and easy to walk daily.

ANSWER: If you really want a small dog (I like big dogs with small children) I would probably go with a beagle, or a west highland white terrier, or a miniature (NOT A TOY) poodle, or a small american eskie. If you want smaller than that (and I wouldn't) I'd opt for a shih
tzu,or a lhasa apso. There are large differences in these breeds but all of them are good with children and pretty easy going, but energetic enough to play. Then you narrow it down by grooming, shedding or non..intelligence etc, If you'd like a more detailed description of each breed I'd be happy to help you there too.  IF there are a couple of these you'd like me to help you compare, feel free to ask.

QUESTION: Diane,
Wow!! I had no idea there were so many breeds.  I am curious why you would suggest no "toy" size dogs.  I like the smaller dogs because they are easier to clean up after.  My biggest concern with a beagle is how hyper they are.  I am curious though as to what a highland white terrier, American eskie are.  I was really looking to keep our pet around 10 pounds at full grown.
Thanks for your imput,
Dawn

Answer
Hi Dawn
I wouldn't suggest a toy breed due to the age of your children. Toys are much more fragile, can be injured easily, are more likely to be highstrung, nervous , fearful and yappy with small children due to their size which they themselves realize makes them vulnerable. Most beagles are not hyper at all.Shih Tzu and Lhasa's are actually considered toy dogs, but are very good with children. Any dog will need regular exercise and walking. Even toy dogs. Many westies are usually around ten pounds as adults, and American Eskies in toy sizes are also usually about that weight. Type West Highland White Terrier or American Eskimoe into your browser and you'll get lots of choices for websites with breed info. You can also go to AKC.org and look at their breed information there. Westies don't shed at all, Eskie's shed a lot LOL but both are great dogs.
A mini schnauzer might also not be a bad idea provided you do not choose an alpha pup.
