Question
I have a 3 week old shihzhu/Bichon. At what age should she be weaned from her mother and given puppy food. And what food is best for her.

Answer
Hello, Weaning should start now but the puppy should only be taken away at 6-8weeks. You can start with baby pablum or oatmeal ceral for 3/6 month old human babies and mix it with puppy milk replacement and offer this in a saucer twice daily, puppies get really messy eatting this so be sure to wipe her face off after each meal not to say her mother wont help you out with that! At around 4 to 5 weeks old you can soak dry puppy foor mash it up and offer that two or three times everyday too...during these times the pupy is still milking its mother and *isnt to be pervented frrom nursing until 6-8 weeks old weaning earlier can cause problems for the puppy later on and weaning too late will make it longer for the mothers milk to dry up properly. I reccomend Authority from petsmart stores, Nutreance, Technical, Seaince diet, Purina pro plan, Royal canin, Purina one, Blue anything with full meat within the first three ingredients is fine I don't really reccomend feeding foods with by products or little to no meat unless of course the dog has allergys and needs a vegeterian diet. Full meat means the bag or package lists chicken, lamb, turkey, fish  NOT chicken or beef by products, meat by products/pork by products that sort of thing, most foods will have chicken and then chicken meal later in the ingredients or lamb then lamb meal its ok what you dont want is by products. I never reccomend canned food once you get a dog hooked on canned food they get bad breath, plauqe build up on there teeth tooth loss and bleeding gums...soak the puppy food for awhile after the pupy is weaned but get to offering it dry once the puppy is able to cope with it for it is much better for the puppies teeth and gums and will pervent tarar build up and early tooth loss. Best of luck with your puppy.
