QuestionMy wife and I will be bringing home a baby Pug in the near future and I have been reading about house training. Crate training seems to be the best method, however, my wife and I will be at work between 7am and 5pm and there is no way anyone can get home to let the dog out during the day. Since a pug is such a small dog, I wouldn't expect it to hold it all day. Is there a housetraining method you would suggest? Is it okay to use the papertraining method during weekdays, but take it outside on weeknights and weekends?
AnswerIf you can't figure out a way of giving it a mid day break, perhaps you should rethink starting with a puppy. Have you looked at having neighbors or a professional dog walker? Many dogs manage being left all day, but I see many problems here and on other sites.
You really need to think seriously about an older rescue dog. These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them. You may find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
