House training a Yorkie

Question
Hi Nancy, I am bringing home a 17 week old yorkie today!  I
want to start her house training out right.  Here is my dilema -
for the next eight weeks my self or my roomate can be home
with the pup alll day and all night.  After this initial eight weeks
there will be aproximately 3-4 days out of the 7 day week that
the pup will be by herself for about eight hours.  Is it possible to
train a pup to learn to eliminate outside when we are home and
on a potty pad in a confined, tiled area when we are not home?
Thanks

Answer
Yes,
Give as much training as possible during the 8 weeks, when you have to leave her for eight hours, put her in a laundry room/bathroom.  Put her bed on one side and her food and water next to the bed.  Then put the pads or newspaper down about a foot from the bed and cover the whole floor.  As your pup gets a special area to go, start picking up the papers until you are down to one.  Eventually this paper can be moved toward the outside door and then he can be directed out. Oh and remember, a dog must be housebroken in each room.  He only keeps his "den" clean and must learn that his "den" is the whole house (one room at a time)
