Question
Hi, Charlotte!
Thanks for taking my question, which is:
My male dachshund-mix, age 2, is very aggressive towards motorcycles, 4 wheelers, loud trucks, etc.  He just goes nuts if he hears one. Also, if he gets ahold of something inappropriate (like a piece of food he's not suppose to have) he gets aggressive and tries to bite if you try to take it from him.

I adopted him from a rescue at 1 year of age, and took him to basic obedience.  He is a very good dog, other than these two problems.

He WILL let me take his dog bowl away (with food in it) without aggression....it's only if he finds something on his own that he won't give it up.

Can you give me some tips?
Thanks alot,
Shawn

Answer
Hi Shawn;
Well, he knows he can intimidate you into leaving him alone if he threatens to bite.
When one of mine have tried this, I threw such a nagging fit, in a really stern voice, that they thought they were about to be eaten. It worked.
I can throw a better fit than they can.LOL
Seriously. I fairly scream,
"DON'T YOU DARE THREATEN TO BITE ME!" Follow it up with about 2 or 3 minutes of pointing in their face and telling them NO WAY will that ever be tollerated and not to EVER dare to do that again.
The shrink down like they are thinking "Dang, I plowed up a snake".
YOU have to be the alpha and they have to understand what you tell them WILL be done, and what you do can be trusted, and NO WAY are they to threaten or bite you.
My little Lhasa is a bit more determined to be a tyrant than my others, but he sure doesn;'t threaten to bite me, EVER!
He does grumble under his breath and sometimes sass back real good, but he knows he can't carry it further than that.
The noise of the vehicles may be frightening to him, and it may be he is trying to scare them off, rather than it being a bad habit.
I have used the Tellington-Touch method of animal massage for years, to help with fears, aggression etc.
It is really amazing what you can do with a 5 to 15 minute massage if it is given right.
I ordered a video to learn how to do them, and it is very easy to learn.
I get really good relief from pain of Arthrituis, and other things that can cause them pain in their old age, and for post surgery recovery.
It took one 5 minute massage to cure my English setter of fear of thunderstorms.
Sometimes it takes more than one massage, and sometimes   more to cure an aggression or excessive barking etc, but if it is caused by nerves ( which it usually is) it can work wonders.
Read about the massages, and if you want to order a video you can do it at this site.
