Question
We just brought a new puppy home and we have 3 other chihuahua's at home. The big problem is with Abbott, 3 yr old. He is very dominant and attacked the puppy last night. He growls and is very jealous of me esp. How do I help Abbott adjust to the new puppy? Thanks for any help!!

Answer
Dear Danette,

Thank you for writing to me about your new puppy.

The most important thing I am going to say is to keep Abbott far away from the puppy at all times!  It is the job of the pack leader to set the rules and you absolutely must protect this puppy.

If Abbott is not neutered, this is the time to do it.  Neutering may decrease aggression.  I would also have a blood workup done, especially a thyroid panel to see if there is a medical reason for Abbott's aggression.

Once that is ruled out you must consult with a behavorist who can determine in person, what is going on in the pack.  Abbott may need a lot more stimulation and exercise than he is getting. A tired dog is a good dog.

He may also need some alpha work and a trainer can show you how to do this.

I can assure you that Abbott is not jealous of you..more likely he is trying to dominate you and the rest of the pack, so it is imperative that you learn the techniques of lowering his place in the pecking order.

Be very sure that the trainer/behavorist you hire uses positive reinforcement and if you are uncomfortable with anything the trainer is doing, stop the session immediately!

Remember to protect the safety of the puppy.  If you have to confine Abbott or tether him then please do so.  In fact, tethering a dog who is displaying signs of dominant aggression is a form of training.

Best of luck,
Shelley Davis
