Answer
Hi Jeraldina;
I have only had one dog with that problem, and my vet showed me how to clean them out. He never suggested surgically removing them.
If you trust your vet completely, and feel he is that good a vet, then I would go by what he suggests.
I have a vet that is that good. I trust anything he advises.
I have had some vets that just shouldn't have a license.
It isn't difficult to clean them yourself.  Not the most pleasant chore, but not that bad.
It would seem to me they have a function, and if they were removed, it would lead to a bigger problem.
I would at least want more than one opinion.
I'm sorry I can't give you a more deffinate answer.
I will search on the web this afternoon for more information on it, and will write you again, if I find anything at all.
Write any time you feel I can help.
