Question
Hi!
I have a six and a half English bulldog and by accident one Sunday that we were eating ribs with a group of friends and their kids, my bulldog ate a rib bone and she seemed to love it. She's been acting normal, and she hasn't had any problems pooing. I'd like to know if it's ok to give your dog bones once in a while, or if this is dangerous for dogs. thanks so much for your time.

Answer
Hi Lucy;
ALL bones are dangerous except knuckle bones.
All othe bones splinter and can get caught in theit throat and strangle them, or they can cut as they pass through the digestive system, and the dog can bleed to death internally.
My Veterinarian says by far the majority of emergency surgeries he performs are from dogs eating bones.
Of course they love them because they are meat flavored.
If you rub meat flavor on concrete they would eat that.
If the ribs were pork, there is as much danger from it being pork as it being a bone.
Pork has an enzyme that cannot be killed by cooking or freezing, that causes a FATAL disease if that enzyme is present.
It doesn't affect humans, but is deadly to dogs.
The rawhide chews are as dangerous as bones because they can bite off a piece and swallow it.
The rawhids swells when it is wet, and it can swell up and not be passed, and can choke the dog.
The rawhide strips are the worse, because they can splinter and they can also cut before they are not mixed with enough saliva and other fluids in the stomach before they swell.
Stick with Milk Bone and other crisp dog treats.
Or for the satisfaction of gnawing, get a Nyla bone.
That satisfies the gnawing need and you can put peanut butter or cheese inside them for the dog to fish out like wolves and other wild canines do the bone marrow.
