My 2 Female Dogs are Fighting

Question
I have a 5 year old Boston Terrier, who is not socialized that well and does not like other female dogs.  This knowledge comes to me after we bought a jack russell puppy, who is now 10 months old.  They have gotten into 4 fights, 2 resulting in a trip to the vets office.  They only fight outside on rare occassions.  It seems the Jack russell will get worked up and aggravate the boston terrier by biting her legs until she has had enough.  They get into a very vicious fight.  Can I socialize an older boston terrier or should I just get rid of the Jack russell?  I have talked to a jack russell terrier rescue volunteer that said it is because they are both terriers and that I should probably get rid of the jack russell because they will not stop fighting until the death of one of them.  Lulu is 5 years old, the boston and does not want to give up dominate dog and the jack will not stop trying to be the dominate one.  I have had expert advise on trying different dominate exercises that have failed as well.  Any advise could be helpful, thanks for your time, I am Very Concerned, Tracey

Answer
Hi Tracey,

It's been my experience that two female dogs are much more of a problem, than having two male dogs.

You could consult a dog behaviorist, I don't know if that's the expert you said you got advise from. Working with a behaviorist is more than talk, it's work, and it can take months before you see progress. It's up to you as to how much time and effort you want to put into this.

Surrendering the Jack Russell to a rescue group is always an option. The living situation is not only stressful to you, it's stressful to both dogs.
You need to separate the dogs while you decide whether you're going to work with a behaviorist, or if you're going to give up the Jack Russell. One of the two dogs should be crated while the other dog enjoys one on one time with you. It's a pain in the neck to live that way, but it assure that nobody will get hurt.

Best of luck,
Patti
