Skin rash and possible treatments or remedies

Question
I have a young female Labrador, she is almost 5 moths old and has been dewormed and had all of her vaccines. She has recently developed a rash on her stomach that is red blotchy and itchy. I have anti-allergy shampoo that I am planning on using to see if the rash goes away, but are there any other remedies I should try or any medical issue I may need to be concerned about? She does sleep in a kennel and we have carpet, could it be an allergy to either material? thanks

Answer
Hi there-

I would suggest taking your puppy into the vet to check for a yeast infection, or possibly a serious allergic reaction. It is also a good idea to rule out mites, fleas and sarcoptic or demodex mange. In the meantime, you can offer her childrens benedryl to help with the itching. Dosage I recommend is 10 mg for dogs under 30lbs, 25mg for dogs 30-50lbs, and 50mg for dogs over 50lbs. I hope she feels better!
