Question
Hi,

I have two dogs, malamute/german mix, 7 months old. One is white, one is
brown. The white one is calm, well behaved, a bit shy but friendly with other
dogs and people. The brown one is also friendly, very confident (too
confident) around people and dogs, but his behavior is challenging.
Unless I have a treat in my hand and I will have him on a very short leash, he
will not accept commands from me that he knows very well. As soon I get
outside the house he will run off and not look back at me once, not come
when called or if he comes back to grab a treat (I try to lure him so I can put
the leash on) will take it and run off just before I am able to grab him. If he
comes back I think he comes because of the white dog that stays close to me.
He loves to go outside, to meet other dogs or in the car. He obeys my
husband better but he is rarely at home. I understand that he is not seeing
me as his leader. He is never aloud on furniture, first through a door, he
always seats for food or toys, or to be let off leash, still he is not taking
commands from me once outside and off leash, or even not look at me.
How can I get this dog to understand that I am his leader and that he should
stay close and behave when I need him to behave? He is smart, I can see that,
but he is looking at me as if I am not worth anything to him. He will give
"shake" to my husband, but not to me - a second later, when I ask him. I am
the one, walking, feeding, playing with them. Makes me mad. A friend
suggested that I should keep him on a 20 feet leash all the time, and pull
him to me when he does not come...Is this enough?

Any advice would help.

Thank you!

Laura

Answer
A lot of people will tie a lead through the belt loop in there jeans to keep the dog with them, and that often works well

But I think the best thing for the both of you,is for you to take him to obedience classes,it will put you in the alpha position, and a trainer can work one on one with you with any problems you are having with him,a trainer can show you how to correct problems at home, and also to make an obedient dog
