Question
Hello,
I have a Min Pin Chihuahua mix dog that I adopted back in May.  He is 15 lbs
(3lbs overweight right now) with a muscular body like the Min Pin but more of
a Chi personality.  Anyway, we have been trying to keep him locked up in the
kitchen due to house training issues but soon found out that he can jump the
3 foot gate from a standing start!  We bought another gate to fix this problem
but I wanted to find out, is this normal?  Should we be letting him jump
around like this (he does so on the furniture too) or might he be too prone to
getting hurt?  Thanks a bunch.

Answer
You should let him jump on people as a lot of people will find it annoying,so what you do if he's doing that is push him off with your hands and say 'off'

Now as for him jumping up on furniture, that is up to you,if it bothers you and you don't want him on,then this is what you do:have him drag a leash around the house and when he jumps up the furniture pull the leash a little(even if it pulls him off)and say 'off' after a few days he will lose interest, but if it doesn't bother you then you can let him jump on and off it's is unlikely he will hurt himself

However if he becomes possessive of the furniture or growls at you at all when you are up there with him do not let him up there as that will lead to a lot of problems-but if he isn't like that and you don't mind he can stay up there

And they usually grow out of being so jumpy,it's usually a puppy thing they grow out of by age 3
