Sisters in heat

Question
Hi!  I am attempting to find out if 2 dogs in heat generally go after each other.  We have two Yorkie/Dach mixes @6 lbs each.  They are about 2 yrs old.  I believe this is their 3rd heat.  They usually love each other and are always playful with each other.  Since they've been in heat @ 2 wks, they have literally been trying to tear each other's throats out.  We've kept them separated, but if a door gets opened - they are immediately at each other.  I have even been bit.  If you pick one up - they both still hold on to each other's neck and won't let go.

We have several other dogs, since we foster.  There are girls and boys and they are all spayed/neutered.  The sisters have not gone after anyone else but each other.  Is this normal?

Answer
I have found over the years that absolutely anything can happen with these dogs, particularly if they are intact. When the hormones are raging, some are no longer the sweet, loving pets that we adore. Some hike their legs everywhere; some attack other dogs for what seems to be little reason... and these are the girls, not just the boys.

I would suggest you put one of the sisters with another foster to insure the safety of the dogs and yourself until they are spayed and placed. Once two bitches get to this extreme with each other, it rarely improves.
