Question
our 13 year old mini schnauzer has had stones and had them removed. recentley she had two bad bouts with pancreatitis and spent three days at the vets. they told us to feed her hills w/d. I have been trying to find a home made diet recipe that we can make and will be healthy for her. hope you can help.  thank's   barry henderson

Answer
No, don't feed her hills. She needs low protein, no grain. Eagle Pack ,wellness and natural balance all three I believe have low protein. low ash, grain free. Solid Gold I think also does. I love raw diet but it is VERY difficult to do homemade for a dog with health issues. Put her on five mgs of vitamin c per day in three doses., vitamin e dose to weight, omega fish oil, again dose to weight, vitamin b complex., biotin. LOTS of fluids, push them, in any form you can managage. Stay away from ALL grains. If you really want to cook for her. Try a seventy five percent boneless skinless chicken diet, salt free, with supplements,. you can add salt free green beans. sweet potatoes. fruits, any and all she will eat, pretty much any green veggies. Use fresh chemical free, organic as often as possible. You need to switch out protein sources every three days or so, use fresh salmon, tuna, turkey or very low fat , lean beef.
Exercise is really important as well Alot of people don't realize that but it's a MUST do. And NO treats. If you must treat, try frozen green beans, raw baby carrots. and fruit
Good luck
