differance between english and american labs

Hello I was wondering what teh differeance is between english and american labrador retievers?

I don't know the origin of many of the dogs I see.  I do know there are lines of what are known a English Gentleman's Labs.  They tend to be compact, sturdy dogs, t classic big square head, and quiet, even temperaments.  Some people may have their own definitions that are different from mine.  Not all english Labs are going to be alike, or all American ones.
