Question
My yorkie-poo is 5 months old.  I was told she was a non-shedding dog when I bought her.  She is black with the tan face.  When we first got her she was a bit curly and non-shedding.  A few weeks later my kids noticed hair left on their clothes after they held her.  I noticed more and more hair coming off on her bed and when I brushed her.  She is now very straight haired but her hair is very fuzzy looking and thin.  Her face is silky and doesnt shed but her body is more fuzzy and definitely comes off on contact or when brushing.  I don't know if she is growing out her puppy coat and will become more silky but I am very disappointed that I have to deal with hair.  It is so fine and fuzzy that sometimes its still on my clean laundry.  Is this normal or am I doomed to deal with this for her lifetime?

Answer
Hi Kim,
First, I am sorry to answer this late. I had changed my email address and forgot to notify All Experts, so I just got your question.
Poodles do not shed, Yorkies do.  I have a Yorkie and a Yorkie/Silky mix. Neither of mine shed much. I don't know what kind of food your dog is on, but it may make a difference. Cheap dog food is like a person eating fast food all the time. It's basically junk food. Look at the ingredients on the bag of dog food.  The first ingredients listed should be meat.  If it is corn, it's junk. I like Purina ONE. It is not the best, but the best I can afford. Stay away from Science Diet. It's expensive and the first ingredient is corn.   I noticed a big difference when I switched to a good food. Also, you may want to have your dog checked for allergies.  Is she scratching?  A good medicated shampoo can also do wonders.  I can't say if you will have to deal with a lot of shedding her whole life, but I really think that if you put her on a good diet, some vitamins and make sure she is flea and allergy free, then you can say you have done your best.
I hope this helps.
