severe skin problem in puppy

Question
Hello, I have a 3 month old yorkie puppy who I recently bought from a dog breeder. From the day we got her we noticed that she had what looked to be a lot of dandruff. We figured after a few medicated baths this will all go away. She however has developed a serious skin condition. It looks like her skin is literally peeling off her body which makes it look like dandruff but its not. The irritation only seems to be on her back and the top of her head. It also looks like eczema, can dog get eczema? Anyway I want to know what treatments and diets can help this situation? It looks really bad. Thank You.

Answer
Hi Daisy,
Yes, dogs can get eczema too.  You can try bathing her in Aveeno. It moisturizes dry skin.   You can also try giving fish oil supplements that will improve the metabolism of fats in the skin. Mix 1/2 tsp of fish oil into her food every day.  The same amount of safflower oil would also work. Make sure you feed a good diet.  The cheaper brands of dog food just do not have the nutrients that a good brand does.  Check the labels.  If none of this works, take her to a Vet.  You should not be having this bad of a skin problem. You may want to call the breeder also.

God Bless,
Becky
