Hair loss in older dog

Question
My husband has a male beagle that is 13 years old. A few weeks ago the dog had alot of fleas, my husband got flea medicine from the vet which helped tremendously, but since then he has been having hair loss even on top of his head, he is just getting thin haired all over. We have heard that older dogs do that sometime and eventually have to be put to sleep before the cold winter sets in, because they would freeze to death, is this common? Thank You, Pam.

Answer
Hello Pam, I have not heard of this.  Doesn't mean it is not so.  But if I had a dog for 13 years I would not put him to sleep unless he was terribly and hopelessly ill.  And I would not like to see him freeze to death.  There are althernatives for you.  One would be when the freezing tempertures arrive have a place in your home where you can keep him.  Another is provide him with a heated dog house if you prefer to keep him outdoors in the winter.  I hope this helps you find a solution.  Thanks for asking, Cindy lou :)
