Question
we had to remove the mother dog from her litter after 1 week because we noticed blood in her poop, and the vet had to give her an anti-biotic to make her better. the vet said to take her out of the house(shes at a friends home) so the she wouldn't pass the anti-biotic to the pups.anyway we bottle fed the pups for 3 weeks (what a job!)they are fine, all the milk is dried up in mom, i was wondering if it is ok to bring her back into the house, and is it ok for her to be around the puppies?

Answer

Hi Rusty,

It's good you separated your nursing dog! Strong antibiotics that can interfere with bone growth in newborn puppies.

I would think if you were advised to remove the mother dog from her litter so she would be prevented from nursing, then reuniting her with her babies if she's no longer lactating would be safe. However, you didn't say what condition your mother dog had. It might be necessary to run a stool test (or another test) to confirm she's truly over whatever sickness she had, which would then make it safe to return her to her puppies.

Call your vet, it's a simple phone call, and lots of peace of mind.

Best of luck,

Patti
