new puppy and older puppy!

Question
Hello
We have an 8month old irish wolfhound lurcher puppy which we rescued about 6 weeks ago. (Oscar) And we have just taken on a 9 week old Deerhound lurcher pup. (Mulligan) Oscar is extremely over the top, hyperactive and very large!  We are wondering the best way to manage him now we have the new puppy.  Osc is far to boisterous and may damage little Mulligan but we dont want to be always saying NO!  This I reckoned might make Oscar resent the new addition. Difficult balance to make.  Should me make more fuss of Osc and ignore Mulli or equal fuss or?? Help!  Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Anna;
I would use massage.
I have used the Tellington-Touch method of animal massage for years, for pain relief, stopping bad behavior habits, curing fears, and generally relaxing hyperactive dogs.
A calming massage, before they are put together so they can play, would probably help relax Oscar, and maybe Mulligan too.
Scolding him would probably make him resentful of the puppy, and make him feel he had been replaced, and he might then TRY to hurt the puppy deliberately.
Scolding in a more gentle way.
More cautioning him, petting him to show you are not mad, but just reassuring. Like, "No, lerts be careful with the puppy, you are such a sweet boy, but you are such a big boy" petting him and speaking in a voice like you would use on a child that you were trying to instruct, rather than scold.
Then let him have a little fredn to play with the puppy, with you close by.
If he gets just as rough again, speak a little more firmly.
In other words, handle it like you would if they were two little boys that you were trying to get the older one to play more gently with the younger one.
I raise my dogs just like I raised my children.
The more you talk to them, the sooner they learn to understand your language, and the better the results you will get.
Go to this site and read about the massages and what can be done with them. You can also order a video to learn to do the massages porperly.

A good obedience course for Oscar would be good too. He is at a good age for it.
Due to his "energetic" nature, I would get the video, and do a massage for about 15 minutes before each class, and before each workout at home, to calm him as much as possible first.
I find a massage before a training session gets much better results from the training.
After you have gone through the course, you will then know how to train Mulligan, and you will have two very well behaved young gentlemen..
I would give equal attention to both dogs, just like you would with 2 legged children.
