Question
Hello, I recently adopted an older small dog, from pictures online, it looks a lot like the crossbreed referred to as yorkiepoo.  The last owner is unavailable to find out what his previous diet was, but the only thing I have been able to get the dog to eat thus far is cut up hotdogs microwaved...  I was wondering if there was a food that wood be similar to this the dog might eat that is more healthy, or if there is perhaps something homemade using hotdogs I can use to make a food that is more balanced than just hotdogs.  Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
You are right... hotdogs are NOT a good food. My daughter recently dehydrated sliced turkey hotdogs for a special dog training treat, and I have never seen anything as greasy as those! She will be sticking to chicken from now on...

You need to put your new guy on a good premium dog food such as Eagle, Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, or Flint River Ranch. There are some other good foods out there, too, but make sure that the first ingredient is a meat or preferably a meat meal, and that there are no by-products in the food. The dog might prefer it dampened with warm water as that releases the aroma a bit more.  I have a couple somewhat picky eaters here who get Eagle canned chicken mixed in with their Eagle Original kibble. If you can stand the smell of fish, my dogs go bonkers when they smell the Eagle Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon Meal Formula.

You need to stop catering to the whims of this little guy. Let's face it... who wouldn't rather eat dessert than vegetables?(so to speak...<G>) Decide how you are going to offer his food (dry, moistened, or with canned mixed in), and then put the bowl down in front of him. If he turns his nose up and walks away, pick the food up and offer him nothing more until his next feeding. Keep repeating this until he decides to eat. No treats... no nuthin'!

Since I only feed once a day, my worst dog (schnauzers have a LOT of patience!), and the last one I ever catered to, took four days before he decided to eat. The last person I gave this advice to (on here) said her dog lasted 1-1/2 days (dog is fed twice a day) before it decided that it had better start eating.

So harden your heart just a bit and get tough with this guy. He is walking all over you.... foodwise, anyway<G>
