Question
Hi, My 8 year old rescue Lasha Apso has an eye infection in both eyes. I have been to two vets and have excellent eye medicine.Problem is trying not to get bit.We are using a soft cat muzzle but the dog is very determined for you not to mess with his eyes. I can physically restrain him but I do not want to hurt him and destroy his trust in me.

Answer

Hi Mark,

Of course you want the dog to trust you, but he also needs to be treated for the eye condition.

It will be easiest if you have somebody hold the dog while you put the medicine in his eyes (or visa-versa). Wrapping the dog in a large towel is a good way of restraining him so he'll be easier to hold.

Approach your dog from slightly behind, not from directly in front of him. Moving in from the front can be interpreted by your dog as an aggressive move on your part. Rest your hand that's holding the medicine bottle/tube on top of his head as you stand slightly behind him, use your free hand to gently pull down his eyelid, and apply the medicine from above. He won't see it coming as well. As soon as the medication has been applied, give the dog an especially tasty treat, such as a tiny bit of hot dog or a bit of cheese and plenty of praise. This will help the unpleasant event to end up on a happier note.

Best of luck,

Patti
