Is our dog in heat

I have a Male Lahasa apso who is 3 years old and a Female Lahasa Apso who is 18 months. The female had puppies on August 5th 2006. She got pregnant around June 6th. Tonight our male is all over her as if she is in heat, is this possible?? How long after a female has her puppies does the next heat typically occur?? I was hoping as a breeder you could answer this question for me.

Usually they are in heat every 5-6 months, but some occasionally come in within 3-4 months. You should be able to tell by checking her vulva.

If the bitch has some kind of infection, the male will also be interested her, so if your male persists and she doesn't appear to be in season (this *would* be on the early side), you might want to have her checked out by your veterinarian to be sure there isn't a problem.
