Dog urinating- lifting his leg

Question
Hi,
We have an Australian Shepard that is a little over a year old.  He is fully house broken, so that's not the problem.  Our question is about the lifting of the leg when he urinates- he doesn't do it.  He still squats, like a female dog.  We've had other male dogs and it is something that they just began to do on their own, so we're wondering why Bear isn't doing it.  It is also a problem because of his coat- he often sprays his front legs while squatting.  So, what can/should we do?  IS there anything we can do?  Is it somehting he has to watch other dogs do?

Answer
There is nothing you can do, Jessica. He may eventually start lifting his leg and he may not. You can try letting him watch other dogs do it, but don't start making a big deal about the fact that he doesn't, because he could become uncomfortable going potty when you are around if he picks up on tension or anxiety from you.
