Question
I have a PUg Female 1 year old, spayed. She has been rubbing her bottom on the carpet for the last few days, tonight I noticed that her rear is red and swollen, slightly..., do dogs get hemmeroids and is there some simple thing I can do to help her?

Answer
Hi Jess,
Your dog has impacted anal glands. These glands are located on each side of the rectum and when they get full, it is uncomfortable for your dog so she rubs her bottomon the carpet in hopes of relieving the pressure. You can take her to a Vet to have the anal glands cleaned out, or you can do it yourself.  It is a messy, smelly thing, so if you do it, put her in the bathtub and plan to bathe her right afterwards.   Place your thumb and forefinger around the rectum on each side of the anus.  Push in a little and squeeze lightly.  A smelly substance will be released. Keep doing it til there is no more.  I know this sounds gross, and it is, but if you will do this every time you bathe your dog, she will be much more comfortable. This is usually in small breed dogs and is very common.  As I said, you can take her to the Vet if you would rather not fool with it.

God Bless,
Becky
