Answer
Hi Michelle,

It's safe to give your puppy original regular strength Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) to relieve his bug bite symptoms. The usual dose is 1 mg per pound. So if your puppy weighs 50 pounds, he can have 50 milligrams (Benadryl comes in 25 mg tablets). You could also use regular strength Children's Liquid Benadryl (because it doesn't contain alcohol) and follow the directions to how many milligrams are in a teaspoon. You can give a dose every 8 hours.

It can also help to apply ice, or ice packs directly to the bite area. If the bites are itching, you can mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste, and apply it directly to the insect bites.

If your dog still seems to be having a reaction by tomorrow, you should call your vet, other medication might be needed.

I hope that helps.
Best of luck,

Patti
