Question
My Cocoa Puffs is 11 years old.  I thought Chihuahuas could live up to age 16 which is why I don't understand why a life full of perfect health has her dire straits now.  She has become dehydrated, doesn't drink water, doesn't eat, sleeps all the time and is lethargic.  She also lost a pound and a half.  I brought her to the vet three weeks ago.  She had an elevated fever and after many tests, the finding was inflamed intestines or obstructed bowls I suppose.  She was okay for a week or so and now she's displaying the same symptoms again.  And she's lost another half pound.  Is her body shutting down?  Is she suffering?  I don't know what to do for her..please help. PS. We have another vet appt. tomorrow.

Answer
Hi Briana,

The lifespans you read for different dog breeds are only averages, meaning some dogs live longer, and some live shorter lives.
Good breeding (genes) diet, how well a dog is cared for and other factors all play a role in the animal's lifespan.

You said your dog was diagnosed with an obstructed bowel, but you didn't say you're having her treated. What treatment options did your vet give you for that?

Being dehydrated is a serious concern in any dog, it's even more dangerous in a small dog. Very quickly it can lead to other conditions or even death.

Please do not delay in seeking medical treatment for your dog. If this were my dog, I wouldn't wait until tomorrow to see the vet. Call them and tell them you're having an emergency, and bring the dog in to the office today.

Your vet should give your dog subcutaneous fluids to fight the dehydration. If for some reason he/she doesn't, you should ask for it.

Until you can be seen by your vet, you can try getting some try Pedialyte into your dog. It is actually better than water for dehydration because it replaces lost electrolytes.

It's still possible for your dog to recover, but need you to be prompt in having her illness treated.

I hope I've been a help,
Best of luck,

Patti
