my dogs heat

Question
my dog came on heat about a month ago and it started off normal, she was fine, running around like normal, but now she shows little interest in anything,(altho she perks up when its time for a walk or someone comes to the door, shes back to normal untill she settles down again at home) she still eats but shes much slower where as before she would practically inhale her food, and her period has changed, its not as red, its more of a pinky-brown and is very runny, we have started putting nappies on her and she can easily fill 4 so much she overflows every day, it doesn't seem to be slowing either, is this normal and if not what can i do to help her, i cant afford a vet at the moment as im about to have a baby, please help her, thank you

Answer

Hi Rach,

You didn't say how old your dog is. A dog's heat cycle is like a woman's period, sometimes the flow is heavier than other times, but
if you are concerned and think your dog flow is excessive, then you have no choice but to provide her with medical care. Sometimes there just isn't a substitute for seeing a doctor, and this might be one of those times.

If you are having trouble afford veterinary care, first talk to your regular vet. Ask your veterinarian if he or she will let you work out a payment plan. Many veterinarians are willing to work out a weekly or monthly payment plan so that you do not have to pay the entire cost of veterinary care up front. Another option is to contact local animal shelters or the Humane Society. Some shelters operate or know of local subsidized veterinary clinics or veterinary assistance programs. If you happen to live within driving distance to veterinary school, check with them to see if they offer discount services to the public. There are two special credit cards to apply for which help with medical bills (including veterinary bills) read about them here:

Once your dog's problem is cleared up, you should have her spayed. If you can't afford medical care for your dog, you REALLY can't afford an unplanned litter of puppies. There are many reduced cost spay clinics, ask your vet or local humane association where there is a low cost spay clinic in your area.

Best of luck,

Patti
