Great Dane Pregnant

Question
My great Dane got pregnant when another dog of some sort got in the back-yard with her. I'm not very sure how far long she is but what I do know is that she started to develope a lot of milk about two weeks ago. So I don't know if that can determine how close she is to labor or not but I hope it can help. How far away from labor do you think she is?

Answer

Hi Darbi,

A dog's pregnancy lasts 63 days on average. If you know the date your dog was impregnated, you can use the following dog pregnancy calculator to get an estimate of when her litter is due:

For the health of the puppies, I hope you've been feeding your dog the special diet which a pregnant dog requires. Your dog should be eating a good quality puppy food (for the extra nutrition her pups demand) and also increase her feeding by 25%. It's okay to allow your dog to eat "free-range" at this point on. Pregnancy and nursing is very physically demanding to a dog. Do not give your pregnant dog any diet supplements or vitamins unless your veterinarian has told you to do so. Keep your dog on this special diet until her pups are weaned at around 5 weeks of age.

As you've learned, accidents happen. When your dog has weaned her litter you should have her spayed or this may not be the last "accidental" breeding.

Best of luck,

Patti
