Question
Hi!  We have a great 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier named Frankie.  I know that my husband and I must not have housetrained him correctly in the first place, becuase we still cannot trust him alone without being concerned he will use the bathroom inside.  When we are gone, he is in a small area with a pillow, and he does well with that...as far as know.  I know that correcting him after the fact does not help, but even worse, if he poops in the house, he eats it!  So we would never know.  And I know that would make him sick.  What should I do?  And where should we start again?

Answer
Probably the best way to deal with this is to use a crate and keep him in there all the time, except to go outside, for walks,to be fed, play time ect And do that for about 3 weeks then slowly let him out more, and if he makes an accident, back in the crate he goes for another week or so

And as for him eating his own stools,it is a fairly common problem, and if he's only eating his own, there's no health risk to the dog,but he can pass nasty bugs to humans if he licks mouths ect You can can get pills that stop this problem, and there's a number of brands, the best thing to do is to go to your local pet store and tell them what you are looking for
