Question
QUESTION: I have a 10 month old female, Sadie.  Sadie has food left out at all times. She is a nibbler.  I am getting a one year old male next week.  He is fed twice a day and his current foster says if food is left out that he would probably overeat as he was a rescue dog and way underweight.  How do I feed the new dog and make sure my new dog doesn't get hungry?

ANSWER: Hello, I like to get all the info I can it helps when the person tells me what breed of dog they are talking about. The best I can say is to feed what is reccomended for the correct weight of the dog...what he is Supposed to weight when at perfect weight....feed two times daily morning and evening half in the morning and the other half in the evening....all dogs foods require different amounts to be fed so I can not help unless I know what brand he will be eatting also i need to know how heavy he is and how heavy he Should be to be of ideal weight.

QUESTION: Sadie is a german shepard/shar pei mix.  The new dog is a lab Catahoula mix.  Sadie eats about a cup to a cup and a half a day of IAMS large breed puppy food.  The new dog eats 3 cups of food a day...not sure what brand.  Sadie is the resident dog who grazes.  The new dog is currently fostered and will be arriving to my house on Friday.  He is currently fed in the morning and the evening.  His foster parents say that he was 1/2 starved when they got him and he would probably overeat.  He is one year old.  So I need to start feeding my resident dog twice a day?  Do I keep their food separate?  Will my resident dog adjust because she is used to eating whenever she wants to.

Answer
Well at around the age your Sadie is now is when I switched my last puppy to scheduled feeding to avoid her becoming overweight I got all my dogs on scheduled meals at the same time since if one wasn't being freefed the other couldn't be Sadie and the adult dog should both be fed twice daily morning and evening to avoid bloating(one large meal is a bad idea). Getting Sadie to eat scheduled meals is easy put her breakfast down in the morning leave it with her(in her crate or in a closed room) for 15 minutes if she doesn't eat it well too bad do this again for the evening meal....by the third day the dog will be eating some breakfast and some dinner and within a week will for sure be scarfing down both meals entirely.... do not offer treats/bones/rawhides or table scraps during this time she needs to get into the habit of eating when its offered first...she will never starve herself and this method works very well...it worked great for my three dogs within 3 days they were eating one whole meal and half the other by the end of the week they would clean there bowls and still do to this very day(its been almost a year now) Do the exact same with the adult dog...but always be sure the dogs can't get to each other bowls as they will share or fight over food and this is not good. The adult dog can safely be fed adult dog food but a high quality one is recommended since he is underweight....you could feed him puppy food until he is of ideal weight but then he would have to be switched again which often causes problems because it takes a few days to get the dog to eat the new kibble ect ect. After being fed a high quality kibble for a short while...two or three weeks he will be back to his ideal weight.
