Question
can u give me a homecooked diet for my silky......vet says he needs calcium and more vitamins.....i want to keep him away from commercial foods if possible ........thank you

Answer
Hi Paul;
I strongly recommend you do NOT cook for him.
You need a degree in animal nutrition to cook for them, and the commercial foods are by far better for him, unless he has some health condition that dictates that he have a special diet cooked for him.
I do sometimes feed my dogs food I have cooked for them, but I have been doing this for over 50 years ( cooking for them), and have ben raising animals since I was 3 years old. My dad was a Veterinarian, and thought me at that age to take care of my own animals.
Being aboe to sometimes cook dor ehtm just to be nice, or because one is ill and has to be on a special diet (in which case that is closely supervised by it's Vet)has come after many many volumns read on he subject.( Veterinarian's books, and bok=oks on animal nutritian).
I recommend Science Diet, Iams, Waltham's etc.
Talk to your Vet bout this.
the chances that you would be able to get everything in his diet hi needs are slim to none.
those brnds of dog and cat foods are scientifically calibrated to the animal's needs, and the care under which they are manufactured is superior to what human foods are oprepared under. TRUTH!
I feed Iams, or Walthams, because the dogs I have now don't care for the taste of Science Diet. these four or a bit picky. Some I have had in the past loved Science Diet.
If your dog needs additional vitamins or minerals, your Veterinarian will let you know which ones he needs, and I am sure he carries the ones you need in his clinic.
GO COMPLETELY WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN ON THIS !
I follow my Veterinarian's advice ALL THE TIME, and my dogs consistently live several more years longer than their breed's life expectancy.
