Question
i have a female American pitbull she is 4-1/2yrs.  recently (a week or so), has been licking her privates and front paws to the point she is making her self red.  I have tried bathing, anti-biotic creams and diapers....do you think it's a allergy?

Answer
Not sure why you tried diapers? If you wish to stop her licking she will need an elizabethan collar, a diaper will only cause urine scolding if she urinates.

It sounds like it could be allergies or even grass seeds lodged in the paws and vulva.

You can try antihistamines from the chemist (at your own risk) make sure they do not contain pseudoephedrine! use a childs dose. This is at your own risk any medication given without veterinary supervision could be harmful.

Make sure she is wearing an elizabethan collar to stop the licking and use dilute betadine or salt water to bathe the area. It could be a food allergy so ensure the food you are feeding has no wheat, corn or grain or artificial colours or flavours. ensure there is no plants in your yard which she is coming into contact with that cause irritation. Try to keep her off grass for a couple weeks also, walk her on pavement and keep her inside, grass is a common allergy.

If she does not respond to any of this she will most likely require veterinary treatment.
My guess would be she needs antibiotics and possibly steroidal anti-inflammatories. Good luck!
