sore on my dogs belly

Question
My dog is a mix breed of a Bull mastiff and we think a lab.  She is seven months old roughly, and she has one large puss filled zit like - large sore on her belly.  She also has a few red marks surrounding it that look like they may also get bigger.  We live in Bullhead City, AZ and I am very concerned.  She has had the sore for two days now and in those two days she has had diarrhea several times.  Other than that she seems to be acting normal.  Do you have any idea what this could be, or in other words, should I be worried and take her to see the Vet?  Thank you very much,

Gena

Answer
Hi Gena,

Small bumps on the skin which are filled with pus are called "pustules". Larger bumps filled with pus are abscesses. Without seeing your dog (and not being a doctor), I can't diagnose your dog's problem.

The pus filled bumps can  be a symptom of an allergic reaction or a symptom of an irritant causing contact dermatitis. It can also be a symptom of mange, or a fungal or bacterial skin infection. Impetigo also causes small pustules, especially on the abdomen.

As you can see, this can be several things, and treatments can vary depending on what the actual problem is. For that reason, your best bet is to have your dog examined by your vet.

I can't say if your dog's diarrhea is related to her skin problem, or just a coincidence. Again, your vet is the person best able to sort out these symptoms.

Best of luck,
Patti
