Question
My dog had constant ear infections and the would always come back so my vet opted to take her ear canal out. That worked for about 6 months and now she is having the same problem with the same ear.  She shakes her head. She has been on 3 different antibiotics had her head x-rayed and she is still having problems. Do you have any idea what I can do her ear is sewn shut. I can't afford the vet I have spend over $1000 on this problem over the last year.
Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Kathy,

Thank you for writing to me.  I am so upset at what your vet did to your poor dog.  He should have referred you to a specialist, not mutiltated your sweet baby.  He was obviously wrong and now your dog is still having the same problem you went to him for in the first place.

For all you know your dog was suffering from allergies or yeast.  Did he do a scraping and find out exactly what bacteria was causing her problem?  Did he use a petri dish to find out what antibiotic the bacteria responded to?  My opinion is that he was incompetant and should be held accountable!!!

I think he needs to refund your $1000 and be reported to medical ethics.

What you need to do now is to find a specialist and have a consultation.  The best way to do this is track down a vet teaching college closest to you.  Pick one of high caliber such as Cornell, U. of Penn, U. of Colorado, etc.  You should be able to google this information.

Try figuring out if this could be an allergy or yeast issue?  They are both treatable.  Please feel free to get back to me for more information and I would truly be interested in an update on this situation.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
