labrador urinating a lot

Question
Hi , I have a Labrador male who is 10 months old. Off late, his poop was coming very loose. So I took him to a vet and he gave some medicine shots to my dog last evening. Since then the dog is urinating excessively. The vet says that medicines are not to be blamed for.
Though the dog is very obedient and trained for house-breaking; but since yesterday-he is urinating even without raising any alarm and even when he is tied.I am very concerned and tired. Please help.
P.S.- the dog resisted a lot while getting shots and was kind of very quite after that.

Answer
Hi Abbie,

Thank you for writing to me about your Lab.

I don't know what kind of shots your dog was given so it is hard to know if they caused the problem.  It could be that your dog is ill and the illness is causing both diarrhea and incontinence, but that seems a bit odd to me that he would have both at the same time.   I do believe that there may have been a reaction to the medication and that your vet doesn't want to take responsibility.

The first thing is to determine if your dog has a urinary tract infection.  I would immediately start him on cranberry suppliments from the health food store, 3x a day to start.  Also give Ester C in the morning with food and then again at night with food.

Did your dog recently have vaccinations?  Sometimes that can cause all kinds of problems, especially when they are given in multiples rather than individually.

I would also find another vet and get a second opinion.

Do not punish your dog for something that he cannot help.

The last thought on this is that perhaps your dog was so traumatized by the visit to the vet that he is having a nervous reaction.   You can give him some Rescue Remedy that you can get either at the health food store or on line.

Best of Luck,
Shelley Davis
