Nursing dog and her pups

Question
First, i can see my dogs ribs and her spine clearly and it's starting to scare me. I feed her like 3 times a day, every feeding is maybe like a cup in half, is that to little? She is part pit bull and part blue heeler. As for her pups, their 3 weeks old, how soon can they start eating puppy food and how soon can i let them go into new homes?? My dog barely wants to feed them anymore. Their all big and fat already... does that matter haha??

Answer
HI Stacey,
The puppies shouldn't be weaned until about 6 wks. You need to greatly supplement her food if she is that thin. Add canned dog food, cottage cheese, and eggs to her dry food. She needs to have a vitamin supplement too. The puppies are taking all of her nourishment, and you really need to do something about this as soon as you can.  Feed her as much as she will eat. Those puppies need their nourishment and they will get it, but the mother will suffer if she isn't fed properly.  They are way too young to take away from the mother , start weaning around 5 weeks and have them completely off her by 6 wks.
God Bless,
Becky
