Question
I have a 5 month old chihuahua, we got him at 8 weeks I'm a stay at home mom so I figured he'd be easy to pottytrain, but he still has accidents at the least once a day. He knows to go outside because he jumps at the door.  Why is he still having accidents?  Is there anyway to prevent it?

Answer
Gotta run a little faster mom.
Because he is still a baby, he doesn't have great control over his bladder etc yet.
Good he knows he is supposed to go out. He will soon stop having accidents, when his organs mature more, and he has better control.
He will need to relieve himself immediately when he wakes, so have somebody ready to let him out, and don't forget to tell him how smart, good dog etc he is when he manages to hold it.
He will also need to pee after he drinks, and do a complete job shortly after he eats, even if it is just a few puppy biscuits.
Also after he plays. does he have kids to romp with?
Or other pets?
Activity stimulates the bladder and bowels. Bear in mind he needs to go, so get to the door and open it as fast as you can.
If you have a fenced in yard, so it would be safe for him to have a doggy door, he could get out by himself.
I really like our doggy door. with 4 dogs, It sure saves me hundreds of steps.
A place for emergencies, or when you are away would help.
I don't see why a dog couldn't be trained to a litter box too, as well as a cat.
I have never tried it, but if I had to leave mine for any length of time, and didn't have a secure place where he couldn't get out, and no one could steal him, say to go shopping or something, I would attempt to train to a litter box. Maybe playground sand instead of kitty litter, and a cover for it when I would be at home, so he wouldn't get the idea that was an ok place to go all the time.
Dogs are trained to papers all the time, why not a sand box?Be patient with him, and let him know how much you appreciate him everytime he goes outside. He wil try harder, and it will get better soon.
