Question
Elaine,
First of all I want to thank you for this website, I got so excited when I saw I could ask someone about my doggy concerns. I have 3 dogs and am having some concerns with 2 of them. The first is my puggle Scrappy. He is about 3 years old and recently started going number 2 in our bedroom when we leave them home while we go to work. It first started when we got a new puppy rotty Kujo. At first we thought it was him marking over where the puppy pottied in the house but now the puppy has stopped and Scrappy has continued. Were pretty sure its Scrappy because we've actually caught him and it just looks like his. I don't know what to do because with our work schedules we can't come home more often and we live in AZ so keeping them outside is just not an option. On top of the potty issue hes been moping around the house since we got Kujo. I know its because hes jealous so we give him extra separate attention but hes still depressed. Were hoping he'll get over it when Kujo gets full grown. Then our other issue is our german shepard mix Scooby whos 6. That dog never shuts up. If hes not whining hes barking. We don't know why. We scold him and he just ignores us and continues on. Its not like hes quite. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Candice

Answer
Hi Candice,

Not sure how long you have had Kujo, it can take a few months for all to adjust to each other. Scrappy may not be trying to cover your new pups mark so much as claim particular space as his own.

It's very human and female to go to the give him special quality time alone to resolve it, but with dogs you want to do the exact opposite: pair everything he values with the new dog. If he likes walks then Kujo goes with. If he likes treats, then he gets them first but he only gets them around Kujo etc.

As far as Scooby goes, you may be an inadvertent barking partner. Give him attention only when he is quiet. Get ear plugs to ride out that extinction burst where he will actually get worse because you are no longer doing what you did when he whined.
