Question
QUESTION: i don't know if you can help, but its worth a try right... i have two mixed boys... all different type of hounds... blue tick and beagle... maybe one more.... when ever I'm not there the eat everything from toys, to carpet, to fire starts... i try and try to proof the room that they are in, and we put them in the cage when NO ONE is there, but i come home from work and that room is messed up... how do i get them to stop...

ANSWER: I don't understand.  If they are in a crate, they shouldn't be able to trash the room.  When you are around you need to keep a close eye on the dog. Use closed doors or gates to keep it in the same room as you are, and perhaps as I do, a short chain fastened to the computer desk. If you catch it in the act, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy. When you can't watch it, crate it.

QUESTION: sorry... but there are four people that live at the house with the boys... and the other three let them out when I'm not there... and that's when they make the mess....

Answer
Accidents and damaged possessions are the fault of whoever was watching the puppy.  You have a people problem, and I find them much harder to solve than dog problems.

I am not sure hounds have the evil reputation for shredding everything in the house retrievers do, but perhaps there is a good reason many of them have to live outdoors.  Some dogs are just much worse than others about chewing up anything they can lay ahold of.  You are just going to have to educate the other 3 that the dogs need supervision.  This is even tougher if they are parents or siblings.

A mousetrap is very effective in making a dog leave something alone. Most dogs will stay away from anywhere they were surprised by a snap. The best part is that it is not you that is correcting the dog. It works whether you are around or not. The mousetrap is very patient and is always on task as long as you reset it.
