Question
QUESTION: Marie, my 8 year old miniature long haired dachshund is having some significant back problems.  As you know, this breed is notorious for this.  He has been having some difficulty walking over the last 10 days until yesterday when he was struggling to walk.  We took him to the Vet today who prescribed rest and steroids.  She said he did have some neurological damage, but did not say one way or another if he would recover completely. I know they don't have a crystal ball, but I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding this problem and the hopes for a good recovery with time.

Thanks
Bryan

ANSWER: Hi Bryan, Yes, you are correct about this breed having lumbar troubles.  It's the way they are structured.  Just too long!  God did not design them correctly ---
Here is some help, to go along with the steroids... ( Steroids are good for short term only:

**Get some PURE salmon oil - give 1/2 teaspoon per day -
Many pet stores sell the PURE salmon oil liquid.  ( Try to find the Alaska Salmon oil )

Also, Don't let anyone push you into surgery unless you have given it a good Chance using NATURAL Options , first.

** Supplements/ Natural and very safe:

~~~please call up the NuVET Folks and get your hotdog onto the NuVET products.
Please order the "NuJOINT" Plus Wafer supplement and the "NuVET" Plus.
Call 1-800-474-7044 and tell the girls about your dog's injury and current diagnosis.
or order here- NOT sold in stores:
http://www.nuvet.com/81098
Make sure they know you are one of Pet Nurse Marie's clients with order code 81098 and ask about the 15% off discount program...
YOUR baby will need 1 NuVET per day and 2-3 NuJOINTS per day.
VERY safe and natural.
They offer a 60 day money back guarantee.  You may see results in less than a week.
The steroids are only a band-aide for the problem.
NuVET and NuJoint help to repair and re-build.  PLUS- reduces inflammation.
Ask your vet if you can give (1) 81 mg of baby aspirin ???  That can help reduce inflammation while you are waiting for the NuVET to arrive.
Many times, the VETs will allow a 81 mg daily.
Keep this baby from JUMPING up - Get pet steps or lift him often.  Try to get him to wait for your assistance when getting up on furniture.
HOPE this helps!
Keep me posted
---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------
QUESTION: Marie, as a follow up, we have our dog on strict crate rest and we are giving him the medication as you suggested.  He does not have a pain response to the squeezing of his back paws and the vet has said that he has suffered neurological damage.  Is this a sign that his damage is permanent and there is a poor prognosis for recovery, or is it still possible for him to make a good recovery despite this finding.
Thanks
Bryan
Answer
How is your little guy doing?  Did you try any of the supplements?  You can also try a little massage.  There are some good books and videos out on HOW to do canine massage.  It may help to give some relief and lower the inflammation.
Please share my site with your friends and stop back again.
Blessings to you
Marie
ASK the Pet Nurse:
Sure, Only time will tell.  The inflammation needs to deminish and then you will see if there is premanent damage to the area.  I would still get him onto some good supplements to help with his healing.  The area will start to heal if the swelling and inflammation is released.
He may need some hydrotherapy in the future.
Ask the vet if he can start the Water Therapy now.  Most major cities and some counties offer this water physical therapy for dogs.
( Supplements and therapy are much less expensive than a 3500.00 to 4500.00 spinal surgery bill).
I always try the Natural choices first before surgery.
It sure can't hurt.
Good luck guys!
