how do I know how far to trim my pugs claws?

Basically, just sliver off little bits of nail until you start to see a color change. Here is a good site with visuals to help you:

If you grind the nails, the dog will tell you when you are getting close to the quick by trying to pull the foot away.

Always have something like Kwik-Stop handy when doing nails in case a nail is accidentally taken too short. Nails should be done once a week.
