smelly yorkie

Question
I have a five year old yorkie that has a smelly coat.  We keep her coat short because it tangles so easily.  She goes out side and rolls in the grass and rubs her back and stomach back and forth along the ground.  I brush and comb her everyday and sometimes I will use doggy wipes to her coat to help with the smell, but she really needs a bath about once a weel.  I don't mind giving her a bath once a week, but I heard it is not good for their skin.  We use Bio-Groom Oatmeal Shampoo and Cream Rinse.  Do you have any advice.  I know that they have doggie cologne but I feel like I would just be masking the problem and maybe making it worse.  Any help you could give is appreciated.

Thank you,
Kim

Answer
Hi Kim!

I'm glad to see that I am not the only dog owner who has a dog that does that!  My chihuahua likes to go and roll in dog poop! Makes me sooo mad!  LOL
Dog colognes are nice and yes they do mask the odor, but are good to use in between baths. Dog groomers will lightly spray dogs after grooming them, just to give that added touch. I like Canine Number 5.
Anyway... the shampoo and cream rinse you are using are good products so I don't see the need to change those.  I don't think it would be so bad to bathe her once a week. Most long haired dogs that are taken care of, get that.  People who show dogs will often bathe their dog before every show, and they will often travel to a show every weekend.  If she shows signs of dryness, excessive scratching or dandruff then you may need to cut back. There are also dry shampoos that you can spray on the coat, then brush out. I'm sure they make them for dogs, but I would just buy the kind people use.  My little Yorki-Silky mix takes after the Silky Terrier and doesn't have the real long hair in which I am thankful, but I still bathe her about every other week.
Here's a hint I heard from a woman who shows Bassett Hounds.  To get rid of the "doggy" smell, she takes Listerine mouthwash, puts it on a cloth and rubs her dog down. She swears it gives them a fresh, clean smell. I have never tried it, so you will have to let me know how it works if you do.  I also use baby wipes on my dogs, not the doggy kind, just baby wipes.  It seems to give them a fresh smell and it is good especially for my Chinese Crested dogs who have no hair on their backs!
Anyway, in short.... I think you will be fine bathing her once a week if you want.

God Bless,
Becky
