Question
QUESTION: Our pup born in October 2009 has been biting his backside and has runny/yellow stool.. we were told it was a worming problem, so we plan to give him tablet but are worried it might be his hygiene or inflammation.. should he go to vet?

ANSWER:
Hi Travis,

Unless the person who told you your puppy had worms did a fecal test, you're just dealing with guesswork. I suggest you take your puppy to a veterinarian, and should worms be confirmed, you will be given the correct medication, at the correct dose for the kind of parasite your puppy has.

You shouldn't put off having your puppy examined, diarrhea can be a serious condition in puppies. Bring a fresh sample of your pup's stool with you to the vet. It doesn't need to be a lot (about the size of a quarter) so testing can be done.

Best of luck,

Patti

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply. You are right we should take him to vet, although his behavior is pretty normal, he is running around and playful most the time.. The person who said he had worms also sold us the dog.. we are covered for 7 days for emergency treatment .. best to call them and ask. Thanks again.

Answer
Hello again,

It's very common for puppies to be born with "worms", but even a breeder with all of their experience needs to run a fecal test to confirm that, and to know what kind of worm the puppy  has. It's best to have your puppy examined by a doctor, no matter what the breeder may say.

Best of luck,
Patti
